Dancing Tid-bits
The Dance Terms

Hi Max,

I love reading your Dancing Tid-bits, but the dance terminology... sometimes I'm completely lost. Help! ......Sheryl

****************************

Max, I love reading Dancing Tidbits but as a total beginner some of the terms you use totally baffle me. Is it possible you could print a list of these, i.e. Fan : Hockeystick : Natural top

I could go on Thank you, ...Foster

Dear Sheryl and Foster and others,

Thank you for reading "Dancing Tid-bits". I want these letters to cover from very mundane to some fairly advanced topics on technique. I hope they will be readable by novices as well as advanced dancers. In letter #5, I discussed the American and the International Styles. You may want to read that letter on the websites listed above.

Of course the terminology will be confusing because it depends on what kind of style you are pursuing. Feel free to ask your teacher because really in the long run you do not become a dancer by browsing the websites. As far as I am concerned there is only one Style, "Good Style Dancing". At a higher level, both styles tend to merge together.

Having said that, if you want to understand these terms better, I suggest the following.

1. Books.
(a). The ISTD "Ballroom Technique",
(b). Technique of Ballroom Dancing by Guy Howard,
(c). ISTD 5 Manuals of Latin Dancing
(d). Latin Technique by Walter Laird

2. Videos: WWW listed above, advertises many Videos on these dances as well as ISTD website has Syllabus Videos. So do many other vendors.

3. Your Teacher: will be an excellent source to clarify these basic terms

4 The Web: Many websites listed in this letter enumerate the syllabus figures, check them out.

Questions and comments to Dancemax@aol.com, thank you.
