On 9 October last we informed you about the sad split up Slavik Kryklyvyy & Joanna Leunis. Today we are happy to be able to inform you that Joanna has found herself a new perfect match in Louis van Amstel. Enclosed you can read all about the new partnership in our press release. As for Slavik we know he still is at a stage of try outs and is making up his mind to make the right choice for the future. He also clearly intends to come back on the dance floor. We wish Slavik will make a choice which will make him happy so we can all enjoy his enormous talent soon again as well. Karyna Smirnova informed us that she will stay in New York for now and take some time to decide on her future steps. We hope she will choose for dancing. "It is interesting to notice how fast news travels since we are all connected to the world wide web. Sometimes this news travels faster than real life! Louis van Amstel & Karyna Smirnova split up last weekend while demonstrating in Japan. Immediately following that news the world started to imply that Louis would dance with Joanna Leunis - the current World Amateur Latin champion. Yes, the plans were there but not the facts. It was only yesterday that Louis and Joanna danced together for the first time in their lives. Just a try out. And the try worked! Today they have already created the choreography for all the five dances. They are exited and so are we. It feels that their mutual background of working with our team makes it all come so easily. The excitement is so enormous that Louis & Joanna would love to start immediately at the United Kingdom Championships next month. Fortunately the entries are already closed. This will give Louis & Joanna the time to not only be able to perform their new choreographies well but also to grow in their movement qualities. It gives them the time to mentally get used to each other and to look forward to a greater start. They have decided to represent Holland. This feels great for our small nation; Louis has represented Holland with flying colours in the past: he became twice World Amateur Latin champion and World Champion South American Showdance together with Julie Fryer. Louis & Joanna seem to be happy to be back in town. So are we. We remember Joanna being totally at a loss when she split up with Slavik last October. Already after one (!) week she sighed that she was afraid to not find a partner. She was afraid that the dance world would forget her. Well, Louis didn't! Their debut will be in February when they will dance a Dutch championship qualifying competition followed by the Dutch Professional Championship on March 11 in the famous Kurhaus in Scheveningen: the venue where Joanna won her first international amateur title last year. We hope that this news will bring clarity and some excitement to all who love Latin American dancing. Truly yours, TEAM AMSTERDAM Maximiliaan Winkelhuis |

Slavik Kryklyvyj and Joanna Leunis from Belgium, one of the most talented
latin couples recently seen on the competitive scene, the currently reigning
Amateur World champions have decided to change partners. Slavik and Joanna
have a short, but most impressive career history together. They came on the
scene just over two years ago virtually unknown, broke to the finals and
then proceeded to winning the major titles such as British Open and World
Championship. They are now looking for further challenge, we understand
they intend to continue their careers separately.
Slavik and Joanna can be contacted through Ruud Vermey

andrew.miller1@libertysurf.co.ukComments from Andreas Molisch Andreas.Molisch@tuwien.ac.at In one of the most thrilling finals of the last years, today Augusto Schiavo/Caterina Arzenton upset the reigning champions Lucca and Lorraine Baricci to gain their first professional World Championship title. The finals were the most closely runs since the epic battles between Hilton/Hilton and Wood/Lewis a decade ago. Almost every single dance was a 6:5 decision, and in the end a single mark in the last dance, the Viennese Waltz, made the decision. English Waltz went 6:5 to the Bariccis, Tango and Slowfox 6:5 to Schiavo/Arzenton. Bariccis took the Quickstep 7:4, but the Italians took the Viennese 6:5 and thus sealed their victory. Both couples showed sensational dancing, and the decision must have been really tough for the judges. The third place was also closely contested, but in the end Giorganni/Manfredini took four dances, with only the Slowfox going to Hawkins/Newberry. Jonathan Wilkins/Katusha Demidova got the fifth place, and Cacchiari/Garshinova finished sixth.

I am back and what a night of rehearsals we had last night. It was extremely tiring as we had to give it 150% every time we danced and it went on and on , one after the other. One mistake and we had to start again. Dancers were changing their tops or ringing them out and talk about tomato faces!!! Even with all the pain it is so much fun as all the dancers are working as a team and we have all become great friends off the competition floor. Last night was extremely exciting as it all fell into place. Although their are dancers panicking as we have to show costumes at next rehearsals and either material hasn't arrived or the dress makers are making them, and I am one of those people. Gosh I wish I could say so much more but unfortunately with "confidentiality agreements" it isn't possible, but I will say it is going to be amazing!!!!!! It is getting closer and I am so excited and the nerves are kicking in!!! Stay tuned! |

After studying for his master degree, Ruud Vermeij from Team Amsterdam, was the first coach introducing the universal dance principles from Laban in competitive Ballroom dancing. He published his Master study material in the book "Latin. Thinking, sensing and doing Latin American dancing". Mr Vermeij decided to continue his research in both Standard and Latin American dancing. This Summer he concluded his Doctorate which included research on creating a dance profile for dancers. Major issues in his thesis were: the style of the dance itself, the style of the teacher and/or choreographer and the personal style of the dancers. Mr Vermeij found that in this group of styles dancers often fall victim to the energy of the competitive nature of the institution. His dance profile has brought us a step closer how to deal with personally orientated strategies. His work may help dancers to cope with and to contribute positively to the practice of Ballroom dancing. A 410 page document summarises the depth of his research and analysis. His doctorate work stretched over a period of five years .His new book is now in process. |

Bill Mitchell sadly passed away on Monday evening in his home rown of Brighton...Bill together with his wife Silvia were Ballroom Champions as both Amateurs and Professionals...In the latter years he became well known as a top International Coach and Adjudicator...He will be remembered by the many dancers for his wonderful stories and sense of humour. I can remember the times he and Silvia taking parties of dancers on regular trips to Majorca and maindland Spain...He always commenced his stories with the words "Now this is the truth" then into one of his favourite yarns...I will especially miss him, working as his Music Man, and friend. Special thoughts must go out to Silvia who, unfornately, was also in Hospital when Bill passed away...She has requested any donations to be sent to her and she will donate them to the Hospital and Hospice that were taking care of Bill. The funeral will take place on August 29th at North Chapel, Woodvale Crematorium, Brighton at 11.15am. There was a competition planned for Sunday Sept 10th at Leatherhead. Sadly it has to be cancelled at this very short notice. Please forward this message to anyone who might be planning to attend. |
