Big Bands back at the Tower Ballroom, Blackpool

The Big Band sound is back at Blackpool Tower this year as the glory days of swing, jive and the mellow sounds of Frank Sinatra return to the magnificent setting of the Tower Ballroom from the end of May onwards.

The New Squadronaires, The Memphis Belle Swing Orchestra (as seen in the blockbuster movie The Memphis Belle), The Glenn Miller Tribute Orchestra and for the first time in 25 years, the newly formed Blackpool Tower Big Band will alternate to entertain guests six nights a week.

"Thousands of people have happy memories of dancing to the Big Band sound in the Tower Ballroom," explains Martin Blore, executive general manager of Blackpool Tower and Circus. He added: "No other venue in the world can provide such a perfect backdrop for this kind of music, which has experienced a resurgence of popularity over the last few years and appeals to people of all ages. We are looking forward to recreating nostalgic memories for those who enjoyed this music the first time around, whilst introducing our younger guests to the spectacular sound of these talented orchestras."

During the day, the Ballroom's resident organists provide non-stop live music from 10am onwards.

Guests can dance to the sounds of the famous mighty Wurlitzer and for those guests looking for entertainment in the evenings only, admission to enjoy the Ballroom's Big Band nights will be just £5 per person after 8pm.

Blackpool Tower, this year celebrating its 107th anniversary, undoubtedly offers one of the best value days out in the country with an all-inclusive price of just £10 for adults and £6 for a child or senior citizen. Family tickets are £30 for two adults and two children.

Amazingly, the ticket includes admission to all seven levels of entertainment as well as entrance to see the international Tower Circus. The Circus has won four prestigious awards including Best Ground Performer, Best Clown for Mooky, who returns this year and the whole production was voted the Best Circus in the Country by the Circus Friends Association. More recently, Blackpool Tower Circus was voted 'Most Professional Production' by readers of World's Fair newspaper.

This year promises to be more spectacular than ever, with acts from almost every corner of the globe displaying amazing skills from high wire to the flying trapeze. The now legendary water finale continues to leave audiences of all ages spellbound.

No visit to the Tower would be complete without a visit to the Tower top and the glass floored Walk of Faith 380 feet above the promenade. New for this year is the introduction of an official Proposal Point (at 420 above sea level). Here you can pop the question on one knee (on a specially provided velvet cushion) whilst watching the sunset on the Irish Sea.

You can then sign the official proposal book and if you really feel like really splashing out, the Tower management can arrange a violinist, flowers and champagne to complete the occasion! You're in good company for it was here that Coronations Street's Tyrone chose to ask for Maria's hand in marriage…..and she accepted.

For children there's Jungle Jim's indoor play area and the Hornpipe Galley which provides live family entertainment throughout the day. Discover the mysteries of the deep in Undersea World, and learn how the world evolved on the Dawn of Time ride.
